Griffith Park Visitor Center Temporarily Closed for Major Upgrades

LOS FELIZ — The Griffith Park Visitor Center is getting a much-needed facelift and is expected to reopen in mid-October, according to park officials.

“The Visitor Center is finally transitioning into the new century,” said Gerry Hans, president of the Friends of Griffith Park. “The long-term vision is to transform the Rancho Los Feliz Adobe — dating back to the 1830s — from office space into a fully functioning welcome center and museum.”

As part of the remodel, two new large interactive displays will be added — one highlighting the park’s diverse plants and wildlife, and another sharing educational and historical information. A massive interactive park map is also being updated.

Interactive smart boards will replace the Visitor Center’s outdated displays, Hans said, making better use of the building’s limited indoor space.

Additional upgrades include new and restored taxidermy displays of local wildlife, a shade structure for visitors, and game tables that guests can borrow directly from the center, said Tracy James with the parks department.

The renovation project comes in under $200,000 and is funded by the Griffith J. Griffith Charitable Trust. Two Lincoln Heights-based companies — RabCup Production Services and Prey Taxidermy — are handling the design, fabrication, and taxidermy work.
